Redux: MCM Hairpin Leg Coffee Table
This one time, we built an MCM coffee table. Full disclosure, this table always made me nervous - Penelope (that's the dog, in case you're new here) bumped her head on it SO many times. There was no way it was sticking around once we had a baby, so we took the top off and put an ottoman top on it. That only lasted a little while (maybe 6 months?) before I found a sturdier ottoman for a great deal online. Then we moved the living room around and our baby turned into a toddler, so now we're living coffee table free. The second ottoman now lives in the basement, we sold the mid-century modern coffee table and legs on Craigslist, as well as the DIY ottoman top!
That being said, it sure was pretty. Just not good for a house with a clumsy dog and/or a toddler.
Here's the original post:
Ever since we assembled the Karlstad, we knew we needed a new coffee table. A couple of weeks ago we sold the coffee table on Craigslist to give us the kick in the pants we needed to figure it out. And here she is!
We got the legs from here (we got 14" legs - measure your couch to figure out what height you want your coffee table at.) We used premium pine 1"x6" and 1"x2" and broke in our new Kreg jig for the build. (Side note: pocket holes are my new favorite thing). The stain is a water based wipe on stain from Minwax in Walnut and we used Annie Sloan clear wax on both the table top and legs.
We are SO happy with how it turned out. While it's not perfect, it cost significantly less than the ones I had my eye on. Oh and then there's the satisfaction of the whole DIY aspect. Penelope approves too - she can't wait to distract us so that she can grab some cheese of the coffee table!
